The theoretical and empirical bases of the project, which is designed to improve counseling of freshmen students for both inter- and intra-occupational decision making, are presented. The paper is divided into four sections, each of which deals with a different aspect of the topic "Psychological Models of Engineering Careers." Occupational similarities and differences within and between several types of engineers are examined in the first section which reviews research in the field of engineering. In the second section, psychological decision theory is suggested as a framework for studying career decision making. General models of career decision making are discussed, the career decision making of college students is reviewed, and career decision models which expand the general models to give a more comprehensive view of college students' decision behavior are examined. The match between engineering students and their career choices is discussed in the third section. An analysis of the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory is provided in the final section.
