| Summary: | "Whether it is to further learning in general, or discipline in particular, teachers must effectively exercise power." Five power bases available to teachers are identified in this paper each containing the common element that they are all dependent upon student beliefs. These power bases are: (1) coercive power, based on a student's belief that the teacher possesses the ability to punish or refrain from punishing; (2) reward power, based on a student's belief that the teacher possesses the ability to distribute or withhold rewards; (3) legitimate power, based on a student's belief that teachers have the right, given their position, to prescribe behavior within an assigned domain; (4) referent power, based on a student's identification with the teacher as a role model; and (5) expert power, based on the student's belief that the teacher possesses some special knowledge or expertise. An analysis is offered of each of the five power bases and how it may be enhanced or eroded. Research on the relationship between power bases and selected learning outcomes (e.g., student achievement) is discussed, and questions about power bases still in need of investigation are identified.
