A Longitudinal Study of Career Interests and Mathematics Attitudes for Students at the Eighth and Twelfth Grade Levels [electronic resource] / Patricia B. Elmore and Others.

This study investigated the relationship between attitudes toward mathematics, career interests, and parent variables measured at grade eight and attitudes toward mathematics and career interests as measured at grade twelve. The longitudinal nature of the study will help to determine changes in math...

The longitudinal nature of the study will help to determine changes in mathematics attitudes and career interests from the junior to the senior high school level. The subjects were 458 high school seniors from midwestern senior high schools who participated in the first phase of the study as eighth graders. The instruments administered to the students included the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitudes Scales and the Unisex American College Testing Interest Inventory (UNIACT). Canonical correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between students' attitudes toward mathematics and career interests at the twelfth grade level and their parents' attitudes toward mathematics four years earlier.
