Description
Summary:This fact sheet was written to help persons who counsel students with disabilities at all levels of education, but especially those who work with students in high school, community and junior college, career training schools, vocational technical schools, colleges, universities, and graduate programs. Four strategies that advisors and counselors can use in working with disabled students are described: (1) encouraging students to assess interest, aptitude, and achievement; (2) providing non-restrictive career counseling; (3)encouraging students to base decision-making about postsecondary education on a variety of criteria, including training available, cost, and auxiliary aids and accessibility; and (4) assuring access to the counseling environment. Selected resources are described which may help implement the strategies. (NB)
