Summary:This report describes and summarizes the discussion at a national leadership meeting conducted by the National Alliance of Business. The meeting focused on the complex and challenging economic, social, and educational issues facing today's youth. Participants included business executives, foundation presidents, mayors, state legislators, county commissioners, educators, employment specialists, and civil rights, labor, and social policy leaders. Themes that arose from presentations and round-table discussions included the following: (1) a "window of opportunity" with the number of jobs expected to grow faster than the number of young people by the year 2000; (2) worker preparation; (3) literacy; (4) higher expectations for schools; (5) collaboration among education, employment, and social service providers; (6) goals for the year 2000; and (7) a call to action.
