Maternal-Infant Behavior at 2-Days and at 28-Days Post-Partum Following Maternal-Infant Contact in the Recovery Room [electronic resource] / Jacob L. Gewirtz and Others.
Behavioral outcomes in mother-infant interaction in the first month of life after contact in the recovery room are described. In the first postpartum hour, personnel presented 62 infants to their mothers. Personnel crossed two modes (skin-to-skin versus cradling) and two durations (15 versus 60 minu...

520 | |a Behavioral outcomes in mother-infant interaction in the first month of life after contact in the recovery room are described. In the first postpartum hour, personnel presented 62 infants to their mothers. Personnel crossed two modes (skin-to-skin versus cradling) and two durations (15 versus 60 minutes) of contact. Instances of maternal and infant behaviors in observation sessions during and between feedings at 2 days and 28 days postpartum were scored. This report presents descriptive data on maternal-infant behaviors, along with: (1) significant behavioral findings from multivariate analyses of covariance employing the early contact design; (2) findings of significant covariate effects on maternal-infant demographic factors; and (3) findings of significant residual effects controlling design manipulations. Findings are discussed in terms of their value as normative, descriptive data of maternal-infant behavior in the first month of life, and in terms of their implication for maternal attachment following the unique bonding experience that occurs in the recovery room.
