Description
Summary:The fact book presents statistical data on national, regional, and southern state trends affecting higher education. It contains 75 tables presenting information from databases of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) on population, economic factors, elementary and secondary education, government finances, higher education enrollments, degrees granted, college and university finances, student costs, student financial aid, and faculty salaries and benefits. A set of tables called "SREB State Profiles" provides overviews of the progress and national position of the southern United States region and each of the individual southern states. The data indicate that state and local government expenditures per person in the southern region remain below national levels. College enrollments are growing faster than the national average in all but three SREB states. College costs are shifting from states to students and their families. Faculty salaries are below national averages. The fact book contains a list of SREB definitions of institutional categories and a list of state higher education agencies. (JDD)
