It is deliberately focused on a few issues that will interest young adolescents, and is not intended to be comprehensive. The six lessons stress individual action and include opportunities to assess current situations at school or at home. Lesson 1 introduces the goals of the curriculum and encourages students to share what they know about the environment. In lesson 2, students monitor their water use for a day and calculate the total number of gallons of water used by the class in one day. Lesson 3 continues the theme of personal responsibility with a student assignment to collect all personal garbage for a day. In lesson 4, students survey sources of air pollution at home or at school and commit to an action to help reduce air pollution. Lesson 5 broadens the focus from local aspects of environmental issues to global issues, with the introduction of rain forests as an important environmental resource. In lesson 6, students are encouraged to review the commitments they have made and assess their progress toward an environmental ethic. Student information and worksheets are included. (LLL)
