Results from statewide telephone surveys in Mississippi and North Carolina indicated that significantly fewer blacks than whites watched public television. However, most of the differences disappeared when education was held constant. A similar survey in predominantly black areas of Columbus, Ohio, found that viewing was heavier among blacks than among whites. The saturation of black households by television was considered a possible explanation for the high level of use of public television among blacks in that study. In all three studies, black viewers reported a higher level of viewing of black-oriented programs than did whites. (Author/AA) | ||
