Summary:Covering the period January 1 through June 30, 1976, this fourth and final semi-annual report of the first two-year grant for the Applied Fishery Science Program operating at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska presents the following information; Background (program objectives, advisory committee, and program staff); Program Progress (planning and coordination of educational program, student recruitment, program publicity, and funding sources and development of the academic program--curriculum courses, student performance and retention, and future students); Advisory Services; Aquaculture Facilities (introduction, pink salmon capture and handling, spawning procedures, chum salmon capture and handling, coho salmon capture and handling, incubation procedures and results, premature emergence, release of pink salmon fry, making program and future hatchery plans); Appendices (financial report, revised membership, technical advisory committee, the Chairman's report, and the Director's report). Major highlights reported in the summary include: a positive outlook for the future of salmon aquaculture in Alaska and development of career opportunities for program graduates; rapid growth of non-program use of the aquaculture facilities; provision of a $214,452 grant for the 1976-78 fiscal years by the Northwest Area Foundation; curriculum additions including Ocean Ranching I and II, Hatchery Practicum, and Fish Biology.
