| Summary: | The report explains how the federal Ethnic Heritage Studies Program was created, gives an overview of the 1974 program, and makes recommendations for future development of the program. Summaries of the 1974 projects, bibliographies of replicable materials produced by the projects, and ethnic and regional indexes are included. The overview discusses development and dissemination of curriculum materials, training provisions for faculty and students in higher education, cooperation with organizations having special interest in ethnic groups, and use of project results. The assessment task force determined that single-year grants do not allow adequate time for curriculum material development, dissemination programs must be permanent and comprehensive, goals for teacher training should be better defined, and community ethnic group leaders should be involved in the training. Projects that most fully used community and local ethnic resources in materials development and training seem to be the most successful. The 39 individual project summaries give information on recipient of grant, name of project, ethnic focus, curriculum materials development, dissemination activities, training, ethnic involvement, use of outcomes and impact, and field testing. Ethnic groups included Mexicans, Alaska Natives, Afro-Americans, Jews, Asians, Slavs, Central Appalachians, Greek Americans, Italian Americans, and Russians. Many programs were multiethnic.
