Summary:This report presents data on recent changes in school and college enrollment based on the October 1977 Current Population Survey. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics considered for students include age, race, sex, marital status, household relationship, and family income level. The bulk of the report consists of tables of data illustrating these characteristics. An introductory section summarizes trends indicated by the data. Highlights of the survey indicate that (1) the percent of persons who are not enrolled in school and are not high school graduates declined for students from 20 to 21 years old from 1967 to 1977, (2) the proportion of black youth enrolled two or more years below the modal grade for their age has been significantly reduced since 1967, (3) students 22 years old and over have accounted for most of the growth in two-year colleges in the 1970s, and (4) the number of 25 to 34-year-old students in graduate school almost doubled from 1970 to 1977.
