Description
Summary:Extracurricular activities have enhanced the lives of students through the years and continue to provide students with additional skills they need to succeed in school and life. This paper offers an extensive literature review of the effect of extracurricular activities on student development and offers a plan for extending successful extracurricular programs into the school day by establishing a homeroom class. The class would bond secondary students' participation in extracurricular activities with the classroom experience, further developing students' academic achievement and individual success. The class would serve as an extension of activities in which students currently participate; motivate nonparticipating students to become involved; serve as a mediation class for handling special curriculum; and operate as an added-curriculum class to handle extra curricula as the needs arise. The paper proposes the implementation of the advisory-class model at Keller Middle School (KMS) in Keller, Texas. The paper describes the development plans, daily activities, special curriculum, teacher training, and possible scheduling conflicts. Appendices contain the project philosophy; samples of a homeroom lesson, advisory newsletters, and a 6-week school calendar; a homeroom-class activities list; and a description of the KMS counseling/mentor programs and other programs.
