| Summary: | This report provides a statistical portrait of Kentucky children's well-being, by county and in the state overall. Part 1 of the report, "Young Families in Peril," profiles poverty in the state, noting that the vast majority of poor families are working, married-couple households; however, families with household heads younger than 30 years are twice as likely to be poor as families with older household heads. Part 2, "State and County Data," gives narrative descriptions of trends and statewide and county statistics on child poverty, births, births to teenagers, single parents, students in school, and child abuse and neglect. Findings indicate that, during the 1980s: (1) child poverty increased from 20 to 25 percent; (2) the birth rate was stable, with an infant mortality rate of 8.0 per 1,000 live births in 1993; (3) county teenage birth rates are inversely related to county per capita income, with an overall teen birth rate of 21.4 per 1,000 population of females ages 12 through 17; (4) the number of children living with a single parent increased by 62%; (5) the transition rate (percentage of high school graduates who have gone on to further school and who are employed) averaged 93 percent, the state dropout rate (defined as the percentage of students enrolled in grades 7 to 12 who do not enroll in school the next year) is 3.5 percent, with about 46 percent of students eligible for a free or reduced price lunch; and (6) the number of children reported abused or neglected doubled.
