520 |a During the 1995-96 school year, 425 middle and high school students in one school district received suspensions for the remainder of the school year from their regular schools. In an exploratory followup of outcomes for these students in the 1996-97 year, three groups were identified: one group of 109 students who were allowed to enroll at alternative learning centers (ALC); one group of 158 students who had the choice to attend these centers but did not enroll; and one group of 158 students who were prohibited from enrolling at the ALCs. An analysis of how these groups compared found that those who attended the ALCs returned the next year to enroll in regular schools at a significantly higher rate than did students in either of the other groups. One subset of ALC students--those dismissed from the program before the year was finished--fared especially poorly during the 1996-97 school year. Seventeen tables and five figures are included.
