Summary: | This Kids Count data book is the first to examine statewide indicators of the well being of Nevada's children. The statistical portrait is based on 15 indicators of child well being: (1) percent low birth-weight babies; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) percent of children in poverty; (4) percent of children in single-parent families; (5) percent of families in poverty; (6) teen birth rate; (7) unmarried teen birth rate; (8) percent of students who are high school dropouts; (9) percent of teens not in school or working; (10) child death rate; (11) child abuse and neglect report rate; (12) number of child deaths from abuse; (13) juvenile violent crime arrest rate; (14) teen violent death rate; and (15) teen suicide rate. The report provides a demographic profile of Nevada's children and families, compares Nevada to the rest of the nation with regard to the indicators, displays trends in Nevada over time, and provides a state and county profile for each indicator. Findings indicate that: The teen birth rate is rising more quickly in Nevada than nationally; Nevada ranks fiftieth on the immunization rate of 2-year-olds; nearly half the pre-schoolage children are not enrolled in preschools; the percentage of children living in poverty is increasing; and the infant mortality rate is improving. The juvenile violent crime arrest rate and teen violent death rate in Nevada are increasing. (KB) |
