This packet is designed to help in beginning the process of minimizing burnout, a process that requires reducing environmental stressors, increasing personal capabilities, and enhancing job supports. The packet opens with brief discussions of "What Causes Burnout" and "Addressing the Burnout Problem: What the Stress Management Literature Tells Us," excerpts from three articles from an issue of "Human Relations" (v49 n2 1996). "A Quick Overview of Some Basic Resources" presents 21 selected references, a description of some resources available from the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), resource aids on "Person-Coping Techniques" and "Bouncing Back from Burnout," and lists of agencies, organizations, advocacy groups, and Internet resources. This section also describes model programs as examples of burnout reduction approaches, and it lists experts from the consultation cadre of the Center for Mental Health in Schools. A sample ERIC digest, "Urban School Restructuring and Teacher Burnout," provides a brief research synthesis on burnout prevention. A final selection in this packet is excerpted from "Compassion Fatigue: When Listening Hurts" by Randall Edwards (an article in the "APA Monitor," September 1995), a discussion of the ways psychologists must take care of their own needs to avoid burnout.
