520 |a The National Science Foundation (NSF) Act of 1950 stipulates that NSF must maintain a program for determining the total amount of money for scientific and engineering research received from federal agencies by each educational institution and appropriate nonprofit organization and to report these data annually to Congress and the President. NSF annually collects statistical data from the 18 federal agencies that account for virtually all support of science and engineering research and development at educational institutions. These data provide information that enables users to examine patterns of support for individual institutions over time and to compare such patterns with those of other institutions. This report begins with an overview that addresses such issues as categories of support, agency sources, university shares, and geographic distribution. The general notes address data limitations and the relationship of this survey to the survey of federal funds for research and development as well as information sources, institutional profiles, and a description of WebCASPAR, a new advanced version of the Computer-Aided Science Policy Analysis and Research (CASPAR) database system. The technical notes in Section A delineate the scope of the survey and list federally-funded research and development centers. The bulk of this report, contained in Section B, is devoted to the detailed statistical tables of federal science and engineering obligations. (PVD)
