520 |a An approach used to teach English as a foreign language (EFL) and American culture that addresses the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading writing) in a complementary, non-contrived way is described. Classroom activities combine television viewing, discussion, writing, and reading journal entries. Students watch small segments of American broadcast television programs, including advertising, and discuss cultural aspects of the content and settings. Both uninterrupted viewing time and discussion interspersed with viewing are used. A ten-minute semi-directed journal-writing session follows, then a freewriting session. Specific guidelines are given concerning style, attention to form (minimal), and audience awareness. The teacher provides feedback on the journal entries, and encourages response to the feedback during home-writing sessions. Review of the entries at semester's end encourages recall of television segments, vocabulary, and related discussions. The five kinds of feedback offered to students concerning form are described, and excerpts from student journal entries and teacher responses provide insight into the learning process. Contains 11 references. (MSE)
