Summary:This guide explains features of the Internet and compiles Internet resources useful to those interested in the education and development of young children. Chapter 1 of the guide explains what is needed to connect to the Internet. The chapter then discusses the Internet's domain name system, electronic mail, mail/discussion lists, newsgroups, Internet etiquette, File Transfer Protocol, TELNET, Gopher, the World Wide Web, various Web browsers, Uniform Resource Locators, home pages, search engines, and Web page creation. The chapter concludes with suggestions for finding information on the Internet. Chapter 2 explains several common commands used on mail lists and presents fact sheets on 30 mail lists. Each fact sheet includes a description of the mail list and its name, sponsor, electronic mail address, type of software on which the list is based, contact person, and subscription instructions. Chapter 3 provides fact sheets on 178 Internet sites. Each fact sheet includes a description of the site and the site's name, sponsor, type of sponsor, Internet and mail address, and contact person. Chapter 4 provides information on how to locate and use ERIC system resources on the Internet, and chapter 5 contains a bibliography of ERIC documents and journal articles on "The Internet and Early Childhood Educators." The guide concludes with a glossary of Internet-related terms, an index, and appendices of materials from and about the ERIC system, the National Parent Information Network, and the ERIC Clearinghouse of Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
