520 |a There is a paucity of literature concerned with theoretical and measurement aspects of self-esteem as a teacher, either in Western or non-Western contexts. In this research of professional self-esteem as a teacher, a model was first developed. This model served as a basis for introducing three separate scales to measure student teachers' professional self-perceptions of teaching efficacy, teacher-student relationships, and teaching commitment. These dimensions were designed to be significant for student teachers' professional development in the course of training as well as for evaluating the effectiveness of a teacher education program. A first-order confirmatory factor analysis supported the independence of the dimensions. A second-order analysis supported a hierarchical model when these three dimensions are subsumed into a broader concept of professional self-esteem. It is argued that this model and the instrument developed are salient for future research into professional self-esteem in the arena of teacher education. (Contains 98 references.) (Author/SM)
