Summary: | This annual report presents results from the College Board's new SAT I: Reasoning Test (Formerly the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT) and the American College Testing Program's Enhanced ACT Assessment for 1994-1995 graduating seniors. The last decade showed some recovery over the previous decade's decline in both Texas and national SAT/SAT I scores, with relatively more improvement in Texas in the last 9 years. The average 1995 Texas SAT I total of 893 on the original score scale was 17 points below the national average of 910. On the recentered scale, the Texas average was 996, compared to 1010 nationally. ACT Texas versus national score trends mirrored the SAT/SAT I score trends over the same period. The 1995 Texas average ACT Composite score was 20.1 compared to a national average of 20.8. Although Texas SAT I-tested students had less academic preparation than students nationally, the percentages completing 20 or more credits improved from 21% in 1991 to 26% (versus 41% nationally) in 1995. Even with the growth in the numbers of minority students tested in Texas in recent years, their scores have shown some improvement. As in previous years, Texas SAT I and ACT Composite scores tended to go up as the values of certain demographic variables rose, such as district wealth or family income. Scores also tended to rise as the values of selected educational variables, such as district average percentage of students passing the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills, rose. These findings suggest that the best way to improve students' SAT I and ACT scores is to focus on improving the academic preparation of all students while encouraging testing preparation.
