The first section discusses the development and educational use of an automated dictionary (AD) that would allow a student to designate a word by typing it and receive information about it, either aurally by electronically generated speech or visually on a cathode ray tube screen. Also discussed are the possibilities of incorporating an AD in a word processor and the larger contexts in which these systems would function. The second section outlines the technical implementation of computer hardware and software in the classroom. The third section describes the kinds of scientific research in lexicography, linguistics, psychology, and education that will be required to realize the full potential of such systems. The original proposal made to the National Institute of Education suggesting the feasibility of ADs is appended. (AEA) | ||
