| Summary: | This manual highlights the requirements of the workworld and what counselors can do to help displaced homemakers make the transition from housework to paid work. Characteristics and needs of the typical displaced homemaker are sketched in an initial introductory section. The second section on understanding the labor market describes finding out about the local labor market and job opportunities and relating labor market information to the displaced homemaker's needs. A checklist for forming an initial profile of the demographics; career objectives, priorities; work, life, and educational experiences; and current family/personal situation of the displaced homemaker is provided in the third section. The fourth and largest section discusses the assessment, exploration, and development of skills through education and training and contains six charts which define basic skills areas and relate housework tasks to job skills. The fifth section examines the identification of displaced homemaker problems and solutions through supportive services. Developing job search skills and placing the displaced homemaker are discussed in the sixth section. A state-by-state list of displaced homemaker programs is appended.
