Twenty-one tables display data on library materials, staff, finances, and services. Analysis of the data reveals that these libraries hold 19 million books, 3.3 million periodical volumes, 8 million government documents, and 9 million microforms; employ 4,471 persons, 46 percent of whom are professionals; expend $87 million, of which 45 percent is for salaries, 17 percent for library materials, and 35 percent for all other; and loan 9 million items per year, answer 9 million queries, and are net lenders at a 3:1 ratio. The basic tables referred to in the text are listed with information for ordering, but are not included. The survey questionnaire is appended. (RAA)
