Description
Summary:This publication contains learning activities which can be used in secondary social studies classes to teach about African, Latin American, and Western European cultures. The activities, developed by teachers in a summer institute, are self contained. The information provided for each activity includes a focal idea, type of activity, title, teaching suggestions, and student materials. Most of the activities contain a story followed by discussion or decision making questions. For example, the focal idea of one activity is that "the primary aim of most African societies in resolving social conflict is to restore peace and equilibrium to the whole community. Consequently all members affected by the conflict may participate in determining justice." Students must read a shortened version of a folktale from the the mountainous African country of Ethiopia which demonstrates this African belief. Following the story is a series of questions which will test their understanding of the story. In another activity, students are presented with 11 personal incidents, all of which take place in West European cultures. Students must decide if each idea is consistent with the idea that Western European cultures place a high value on the individual and on individual achievement. (RM)
