| Summary: | Data gathered from former students were found to have implications for college program planning. Areas of focus can profitably include studies of dropout characteristics and the academic and socioeconomic characteristics of student populations, effectiveness of vocational-technical programs, transfer student success, value of general education courses, appropriateness of grading standards, evaluation of instructors and counselors, impact of entrance requirements, and effectiveness of the student personnel services. Procedures for followup studies of transfer students include the personal interview (preferred), questionnaires, and annual reports from senior colleges. Similar technIQues may be used in studies of the technical-occupational student although dispersion of such graduates makes the interview process difficult. Employer reports are generally most valuable. Followup of dropouts and withdrawals is made difficult by similar dispersion patterns and psychological resistance. However, recent research indicates success in identification of potential dropouts through measurement of student attitudes in areas of motivation, collegiate culture, aspiration levels, family relationships, and socioeconomic status. More followup study of dropouts will increase the predictability of these measures and permit more effective programs for dropout prevention. A sample of questionnaires is included.
