A generative sketch of burmese [electronic resource] / Robbins Burling.
Assuming that a generative approach provides a fairly direct and simple description of linguistic data, the author takes a traditional burmese grammar (w. Cornyn's "outline of burmese grammar," referred to as obg throughout the paper) and reworks it into a generative framework based o...

520 | |a Assuming that a generative approach provides a fairly direct and simple description of linguistic data, the author takes a traditional burmese grammar (w. Cornyn's "outline of burmese grammar," referred to as obg throughout the paper) and reworks it into a generative framework based on a model by chomsky. The study is divided into five sections, so that the first three present the phrase structure and kernel sentences of burmese, the fourth shows how transformations convert kernel sentences to other forms, and the fifth gives morphophonemic transformations. This type of formulation, while it contradicts nothing in the obg, goes beyond the original grammar and gives a more precise description, according to the author. He includes an index which cross-references grammar points in the obg with their counterparts in the transformation-generative analysis. (fb) | ||
