Summary: | This project's main objective in developing and implementing a computer-assisted instruction laboratory program in mathematics and initial reading was to individualize instruction so that each child could progress at his own pace through a subset of materials best suited to his aptitudes and abilities. This theory of instruction attempts to optimize the learning situation by manipulating such variables as the content, nature, and sequence of presentation. Minority-group students (approximately 80 percent Negro)received various combinations of the instruction from 1966 to 1968. During 1965-66 members of the project staff prepared parents and teachers for the technological innovation. The problems in putting the system into operation and the methods by which the students were introduced to the laboratory and its materials are described. It is felt that although much data remain to be analyzed, the findings of this project can serve as a basis of a theory of individualized instruction which would span the diversity and skills found in learning elementary school subjects.
