Summary:Over the past several years, the field of elementary school guidance has grown in scope and importance. This monograph, from the Department of Guidance, Counseling, and Student Personnel at Ohio University, represents a recent, comprehensive picture of the status of the field. These five major sections comprise the monograph: (1) a statement of the need for elementary school guidance and the place of the guidance workers, (2) a summary of available programs of graduate study in elementary school guidance, (3) a discussion of the definition, roles, and characteristics of the American elementary school counselor, (4) a section describing in detail, many functions of full-time elementary school counselors, and (4) implications for the further development of the field. References are given, and appendices include a list of institutions offering degrees. (BP)
