Summary: | The Reciprocal Category System (RCS) is an observational system used to record and assess teacher-student classroom verbal interaction. The RCS is composed of nine verbal categories which are applicable to either the student or teacher (and as such are numbered differently, thus producing 18 categories) and one additional category--silence or confusion. The observer records the classroom verbal behavior not less than every three seconds by placing the number assigned to any of the 19 categories (such as number 1 for "'warms' the climate" or number 5 for "responds") on a tally sheet. The columns of raw data on the sheet are then bracketed into pairs and plotted on a 19 by 19 matrix for a visual representation of behavior patterns and the frequency of their occurrence. The matrix is also used to determine percentage relationships among patterns, flexibility of classroom behavior, and the occurrence of behaviors in any of the four submatrices--teacher-teacher, teacher-student, student-teacher, and student-student talk. As a research tool, the RCS permits the conceptualization and measurement of many verbal behaviors; as a training tool which sensitizes teachers to subtle and uncommon verbal behaviors, it aids in producing teachers who are able to control or plan verbal behavior and who can use the RCS for feedback in their own classrooms. (A five-item bibliography and self-practice tests are included.) (LP) |
