Sections of the unit (1) introduce problems faced by historians by focusing on documentary materials relative to the Lexington incident, (2) survey the work of 19th- and 20th-century historians and textbook authors to illustrate the evolution in findings and opinions on the Lexington affair over 190 years, and (3) explore the philosophy of history by discussing the nature of "facts" and of historical inquiry as well as the differing ways by which the historian, scientist, and artist apprehend "reality." Included are excerpts from court records, from eyewitness and newspaper accounts of the Lexington incident, and from the works of English and American historians from 1805 through 1965.
