| Summary: | This essay concerns the development of cognitive and perceptual skills in children from birth to the age of nine. It surveys issues, beliefs, and information about perceptual and cognitive procedures. It discusses the issues of nature-nurture, maturation-learning, continuity-discontinuity, and critical periods. It describes the development of specific cognitive skills including conditioning; perceptual and discrimination learning; transfer; verbal learning and memory; and concept learning. The essay concludes with some generalizations. Massive changes occur in the child's intellectual capacities from birth to nine years. Children of the same age differ in learning capacities and the child's capacity varies with the way a task is presented. Children learn from systematic experience from birth onward, and many tasks routinely regarded as relatively simple by adults require capabilities that many children do not achieve until late in the age range.
