| Summary: | This report is the result of a study in the fall of 1971 of equivalency testing in English for entering freshmen in California state colleges. The author argues that equivalency testing must satisfy two conditions: (1) the tests should be college level ones, valid for their stated purposes and properly normed, and (2) the tests should be administered so that they help students develop their fullest individual capacities. Sections of the report discuss the strengths and weaknesses of objective testing and essay testing; how these tests could be used in order to meet the aims of Freshman English; the administration of the tests, including discussion of the proposed new College-Level Examination Board (CLEP) Freshman English Test for the fall of 1974 and a proposed CLEP examination in literature for the fall of 1973; the supervision and expense of grading the essays and the determination of passing scores, the use of the test scores, and the relationship between colleges and participating high schools. Three appendixes deal with the expense of essay reading, objective tests in English, and a list of specialists in English testing who contributed to this study. (DI) |
