It is based on direct, in-class observation, but standardized tests and interviews were also utilized. The teacher is described in terms of her role in the preschool, and her behavior in interaction with children and parents. Description of the curriculum focuses on the gradual evaluation from unstructured free play to instruction and skill development. Curriculum is discussed according to three major objectives and their related activities: (1) introduction to traditional nursery school experiences, (2) fostering of self-awareness and self acceptance, and (3) promotion of language development. A detailed report of one aspect of the curriculum (use of books) is included for illustration. The discussion of the children focuses on their classroom behavior as they adjust to the preschool environment. Group divisions along sex lines were noted, as well as differences in activities and styles of boys and girls. The importance of individual differences is emphasized. The Harlem children were compared with a sample of economically advantaged children from Maine. Family makeup and home environments are described in four case studies. Finally, parent-teacher and parent-school relationships are discussed, with emphasis on the inadequacy and ineffectiveness of these aspects of the program. (DP) | ||
