Summary: | The following report is a comparative analysis of data derived from the American Council on Education Student Information Form administered to all incoming students at New College of Hofstra University in September 1973. New College had a slightly higher proportion of male to female students in its 1973-74 entering class. This is the reverse of the national pattern. In terms of parental income levels, New College entering students come from both extremes of the income continuum with greater frequency. The indicated high school average of New College freshmen appears to be comparable to the average of Hofstra students in general and is consistent with figures reported for other students in 4-year colleges. As with other Hofstra freshmen, the majority of New College students expect support from families (parental) of $1,000 or more. In terms of career and personal objectives, New College freshmen are less interested in business and technical professions than are Hofstra freshmen. In reviewing a number of questions related to attitudes and values, one gets the general impression that New College freshmen are, in fact, more liberal or "leftist" in their political and social values and beliefs. Statistical tables accompany the text. (Author/PG) |
