Summary: | There are currently measures before the California Legislature that would make changes in: (1) the composition of the boards that govern the state's public institutions of higher education; (2) the selection process for board members; and (3) the length of terms. The Joint Committee on Postsecondary Education has conducted a survey to determine the characteristics of higher education governing boards in other states. A questionnaire was sent to the chief executive officer of the statewide boards of higher education in all 50 states. Table 1 is a summary of the survey results. It includes information on the governing boards of major institutions/systems in each state. Table 2 lists the terms of office in descending order. It is preceded in a brief discussion. The composition of governing boards is then discussed. Tables 3 and 4 are lists of institutions that have student and faculty representatives serving as members of governing boards. (Author/PG) |
