The relationship between the home and the school is fostered primarily in two ways: through parental involvement in the Saturday School teaching team once every two months and through the home teaching visits. A crucial component of the program is the early identification and diagnosis of handicaps or potential learning problems; a battery of evaluation instruments have been developed for this purpose. Evaluation results suggest that the program of parent involvement has helped parents to be more accepting of their children, more aware of their needs, and more competent in their interactions with their children. Information from the second project year indicates that 85 percent of the parents were at the end of the year using appropriate teaching techniques, using positive motivation and reinforcement, and accomplishing the task assigned. The success of the Saturday School indicates that the home and the school can be effective as partners in learning. (CS) | ||
