| 520 | |a The purpose of this study was to determine if the attitudes of white adults attending training at the National 4-H Foundation were more negative toward blacks than they were toward whites and to determine if the Situational Attitude Scale (SAS) was a valid and reliable tool for measuring the attitudes of white adults toward blacks. The SAS is a combination of situations with racial overtones and semantic differential scales. The scale presents ten personal and social situations in which race might be a variable in reaction to the situation. For each situation ten bipolar semantic differential scales were written. Two forms of the SAS were developed. The instrument was tested for reliability using factor analysis on the 351 adults reported on in this study. Subjects were approximately 40 percent male and 60 percent female. The study revealed that in some situations as identified in the SAS there is a significant difference in the attitudes of the white adults involved in this research. These attitudes were generally more negative toward blacks than they were toward whites. Significant factors related to these attitudes included the region of the country and the population density of the area of residence. Sex also may be a factor. Factors found not significant included age and the position in the organization held by the subject. (Author/RC) | ||
