The unit is not intended to be static or permanent in nature but an ongoing educational process that will help students become aware of human needs and how they can try to meet these needs with nonviolent alternatives. Each section may be used independently so that priority concepts can be stressed according to allocated time. In eight chapters, the guide presents activities for defining behavior; identifies basic human psychological needs; provides values clarification activities; defines the causes and effects of functional and dysfunctional behavior; analyzes the philosophy, proponents, and application of nonviolence; examines the attitudes and processes for making changes nonviolently; and provides an appendix of suggested audiovisual and printed materials for teacher and student.
