The section on the noncollege interruptee examines primary and secondary schooling: the types of programs available, characteristics of returnees, probabilities of program completion, and effect of interruption on educational and occupational aspirations. Most research implies significant economic and psychological gain to those who do return and complete high school. The college interruptee section examines institutional criteria for readmission of temporary dropouts, interruptions for military service, and women returnees, with research predominantly concerned with their academic success after readmission. Concluding comments state two general weaknesses in the literature: (1) lack of research regarding the manifestations of the purported advantages and disadvantages in the world of work for the returnee as compared to those who have had uninterrupted schooling, and for the returnee who drops out before graduating as compared to the dropout who does not return; (2) methodology. A reference list, 17 pages, is included. (LH) | ||
