Description
Abstract:Preliminary inventory of the ²³⁹,²⁴°Pu, ⁹°Sr, and ¹³⁷Cs was made in Waste Pond No. 2 (Facility No. 3513) in preparation for decommissioning of the facility. Based on the activity in the recovered cores and the areal distribution of bottom sediments, the inventory of ²³⁹,²⁴°Pu was approximately 80 g equivalent to 5 Ci. The ⁹°Sr inventory was 0.24 g equivalent to 33.6 Ci. The ¹³⁷Cs inventory was 2.3 g or 200 Ci. The least squares fit of the power curve y = a x/sup b/ shows that significant relationship exists among the three nuclides in the pond. The coefficient of determination, r², was 0.79 for Cs-Pu, 0.84 for Sr-Pu, and 0.81 for Cs-Sr. The regression lines were determined using all the data sets (n = 58); if three suspected points of the Cs-Pu plot are rejected, the r² increases to 0.91. Assumptions used to derive the inventory and the radionuclide relationships are discussed.
