|a Steady state and kinetic data for the thermophilic conversion of glucose to methane by anaerobic bacteria in the temperature range from 58/sup 0/C to 71/sup 0/C is presented. Maximal reduction of COD in the liquid phase was observed at 61 to 64/sup 0/C. The organic nitrogen concentration, an indicator of bacterial mass, decreased in a steady fashion as temperature was increased. A significant deterioration of performance was observed when the temperature was increased beyond 70/sup 0/C. At all temperatures, glucose disappeared more rapidly than the volatile acids did. Glucose disappeared more slowly as the temperature was increased. The rate of disappearance of the volatile acids was not strongly temperature dependent in the region from 58 to 68/sup 0/C.
