|a "Bringing together the evidence of some 390 burials from the Corinthia for the period from Submycenaean through Late Corinthian I, the present study discusses this material in five chapters, each devoted to a particular aspect of the mortuary remains. Chapter One considers the grave forms, of which four general types are evident: pit graves, stone-built cist graves, stone sarcophagi, and pot burials. Chapter Two is concerned with various aspects relating to the treatment of the corpse. It is shown that single burial remained the rule throughout the period, that no conclusive evidence exists for the practice of cremation, and that there was a strong preference from the Geometric period onward for orienting the corpse with its head to the east or south. With regard to the last observation, it is argued from literary evidence that the proper orientation of the body was an important part of the funerary ritual in several Greek communities and helped to insure the successful journey of the soul to the underworld. The many types of objects that were deposited with the dead are surveyed in Chapter Three, and possible reasons for the nearly complete absence of grave goods from all graves during the period from ca. 750 to ca. 600 BC are discussed. It is pointed out that this development is not unique to the Corinthia but occurs also in the Argolid, in Latium Vetus, and probably also in Attika. The possibility of early funerary legislation is one explanation offered. Chapter Four surveys the minimal evidence for grave markers, and Chapter Five considers the regional distribution and spatial organization of Corinthian burials. A chronological summary of the major patterns that emerge from the study together with some additional thoughts about their possible significance are presented in the concluding chapter. The increased elaboration of burials in Middle Geometric II (ca. 800-750 BC) followed by the several dramatic changes in burial custom ca. 750 BC are emphasized, and these developments are linked with the rise of the Corinthian polis. Four appendices document the individual burials in detail."--Page i.
