Abstract:"This study replicated, with modifications, a previous study by Sylvia Munsen at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1986). Selected aspects of an Orff- Schulwerk program of music education in a public elementary school classroom were described and documented. The classroom dynamics; the level of participation in Orff- Schulwerk musical activities of students in the first, third, and fifth grades; the attitudes of students toward those musical activities and selected academic subjects; and the characteristics of students in those three grade levels regarding rhythmic and melodic question/answer improvisation were the focus of this study. An analysis of the data obtained from the modified Flanders System of Interactional Analysis and a narrative description regarding classroom interaction indicated more teacher talk than student talk at times, and an equal amount of each at other times. Direct teacher influence was observed. Student influence involved responding in speech or music to directions given by the music teacher. Data obtained from the Musical Activity Record revealed that singing occurred in every class session for all three grade levels; playing occurred in most of the sessions. The greatest amount of the observed class time was spent in listening activities. A decline in attitude toward music was indicated by the Subjects Opinionnaire: Students liked music less as they got older. The fifth-grade boys expressed the greatest dislike for music. The first graders were rated the highest of the three grade levels on melodic improvisation on the Orff Improvisation Rating Scales. Students in the fifth grade received the highest ratings on rhythmic improvisation. Establishing an environment conducive to nurturing the creative ability and musical independence of students is a goal of Orff-Schulwerk teachers. This study was an effort to systematically evaluate particular aspects of this approach, and to document the impact of such programs on the teaching/learning environment."--Pages iii-iv.
