|a The dissertation begins by tracing the literary background of Goethe's "Der Erlkönig" and by examining settings of this ballad by composers other than Schubert. Criticism, biographies, reference works, and other sources are considered in the second chapter with respect to how they represent Schubert and interpret his music in general, and the place they accord Erlkonig in particular. The third chapter explores the mid-nineteenth-century critical debate about Erlkönig. The various critical attitudes toward Schubert's interpretation of Goethe's poem, the new place of the genre of the ballad, and the implications of the debate for Schubert's reception are examined.

Thus, chapters four and five are devoted to the relevant issues concerning reworkings of Schubert's music and their classification according to musical, aesthetic, and cultural criteria. The first of these chapters examines Franz Liszt's extraordinary promotion of Schubert through performances and reworkings.
