Item Description:"The Southern Review represents one of the earliest attempts to express the culture and learning of the South in periodical literature, and was considered the classic southern review by many. It consisted mainly of reviews of poetry and books, including many biographies and some books on Greek literature, Editor Stephen Elliott wrote chiefly on science and history, and his associate Hugh Swinton Legare, wrote on the classics contemporary literature, law, and other subjects. Besides Elliott and Legare, chief contributors included Thomas Cooper, president of the College of South Carolina, who wrote on scientific subjects; Robert Henry, a professor at the same college, who did literary articles; Senator Robert Y. Hayne, who wrote on the navy; Professor T. C. Wallace, who wrote on mathematics and Hebrew; Josiah C. Nott, the ethnologist; Thomas S. Grimke and D. J. McCord, both members of the South Carolina legislature, and other prominent people. The Review was discontinued when Legare went abroad in 1832." Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
