I was struck by how few HR leaders and managers were highly effective in working with their business leaders. I decided to find a way to understand and examine the factors that facilitated the effective involvement of HR leaders that could be achieved by talking to HR and business leaders. This approach was not new, and existing studies analyzed interview data collected from an individual company (single unit of analysis). A more intensive analysis stressing environmental factors in relation to more than one unit of analysis (involving 2-3 companies) would offer richness and details and also more variance for developing a fuller understanding of the issues and challenges facing HR. A common strategy (Lean) became a context to the case. Companies involved in the implementation of Lean were counted as individual units or cases to enable cross-unit analysis. Relying on interviews, on-site observations, and document reviews, multiple perspectives were gathered on the involvement of HR in supporting Lean. Through this case study, the reader will familiarize themselves on how to gain access to organizations, develop rapport with research participants, conduct data collection activities relying on interviews, on-site observations, and review of organizational documents, and managing a multisite and multiorganization project.
