Item Description:Includes resolutions entitled "Resolves in relation to the public lands of the United States." The document begins: By the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, that the public lands of the United States, whether acquired by conquest, cession, or purchase, are emphatically the property of the several States of the Union, and that they ought therefore to enure to the use and benefit of all the States, in just proportions, and cannot be directly or indirectly appropriated to the use and benefit of any particular State or States, to the exclusion of the others, without an infringement of the conditions upon which cessions from States were expressly made, and a violation of the spirit of our national compact, as well as the principles of justice and sound policy."
