Summary: | This book includes research works prepared by specialists from different areas and institutions, on pre-Hispanic figurines from Teotihuacan, Oaxaca, various Veracruz sites and regions, different Mayan settlements from Mexico and Guatemala, pieces from northeastern Honduras, and even a text on the work of forging figurines from the Classic period. Each of the 16 chapters is made up of a text accompanied by distribution plans, tables of frequency of materials, but especially they contain drawings, as well as black and white or color photographs of the figurines analyzed, images that in themselves constitute a documentary record of great value, both for the specialist and for the general public. "In recent years, the interest in studying these materials has increased, which is why, in a rainy capital of the former Austro-Hungarian empire at the foot of the Alps, several researchers from different countries in America and Europe met in July 2012. To this motley group we were united by the interest in discussing and sharing the strategies and results that each one had applied and obtained from the analysis of different collections of figurines made with clay, made during the Classic period, in different settlements of Mesoamerica. We were all part of the 53rd International Congress of Americanists that was held in the city of Vienna. The symposium took place over the course of a long day in which Rosemary Joyce, Erin Sears, Laura E. Sotelo, Sara Novelo, Miguel Rivera, Michelle Rich, Laura Gámez, Julie Patrois, Patricia Horcajada, Chantal Huckert and this writer exposed and discussed our individual or co-authored research. It is necessary to mention that the novelty of the topic and the importance of the forum had caused the symposium to receive a large number of proposals, which due to the rules of the congress itself it was not possible to include in the session."
